When it’s Art and when it’s Vandalism

By admin | January 21, 2013

There’s this show you can sometimes catch if you have Direct tv or any kind of provider that offers PBS. It’s called Art21 and it basically focuses on modern artists all over the country.

The different artists and their mediums vary and one, in particular, was incredibly interesting and dealt with urban art or “graffiti” as many people often call it. Among the discussions covered, the argument about when it’s art and when it’s not came up and I thought we’d talk about that today.

So, when is graffiti considered art and when it is considered vandalism?

Is it protected overall because of our first amendment rights? Are there restrictions that any budding tagger should be aware of?

It’s a bit of a tricky issue and one that has only gotten compounded with our cultures evolving opinions on art and expression. The general consensus is that if you have permission to cover a wall, then have at it. But what about abandoned areas and places where there may not be a clear owner.

That is where it can get complicated. Someone still owns that property regardless of it being an individual or a city. It’s important that you do your research and know your rights before you pursue this art form.

Graffiti is widely considered an acceptable form of art and self-expression, but it is commonly associated with acts of vandalism so you need to make sure you’ve done your homework. Otherwise, you could face legal ramifications.

Comparing the Art of Dan Witz and El Cesco

By admin | July 4, 2012

Graffiti art is one of the most mistaken forms of art in this generation. Many people think of the graffiti on the side of a bridge, when they think of graffiti. I honestly think it is one of the coolest forms of art. Everybody has their own opinion on it but most people are either one way or the other on it. Graffiti art can make just as much money as any other form of art out there, if not more. Even the graffiti in places Read the rest of this entry »

Why is Avoid Pi so Well Known?

By admin | June 30, 2012

To many, Avoid Pi is an artist who makes what he wants when he wants and where he wants without feeling the need to explain his work. If asked, Pi will describe himself as a rebel inquisitively looking for a cause while making art along the way.

Avoid Pi’s style is a unique combination of experimentation and exploration which blurs the boundaries between fine art, Graffiti Art and Street Art. This gives Pi’s artwork a cryptic meaning which challenges the viewer’s way of thinking about Public Art.Never heard Read the rest of this entry »

Why is Graffiti So Popular Today?

By admin | June 27, 2012

Graffiti can be found anywhere these days. Parks, billboards, overpasses, and mailboxes have been riddles with scrabble for as long as anyone can remember. However, the 1990′s started a big boom of graffiti related with Generation X, Y, and Z.

The reason for the population of graffiti may be found behind its message. Graffiti is a form of art that allows for virtually anyone to be self-expressive. Given that there is a taboo behind graffiti, it also allows for some individuals to receive a euphoric Read the rest of this entry »

The Art of AVANT: Geurrilla or Becoming Mainstream?

By admin | June 23, 2012

When it comes to different styles of art, some are far more easy to categorize than others. For those which don’t necessarily fit within a certain box, the term “Avant Garde” is often applied. For a long period of time, pieces labelled as Avant Garde were categorized in that way because they were different from the norm and stood out as being not only unique, but occasionally provocative and even dangerous. In modern times, however, Avant Garde art has Read the rest of this entry »
